May 18 - Central Virginia

DAY #64
START LOCATION: Cove Mtn Shelter
FINISH LOCATION: Thunder Hill Shelter
TODAY'S MILEAGE: 17.3
TRIP MILEAGE: 761.3
MILES TO GO: 1,417.8

I slept so heavily last night. I actually passed out blogging. I've
never done that before. Bottom line... I was well rested today. God
knows I needed it. Why? Another first in the AT. The northbound AT
went below 1,000' elevation for the first time ever today. What made
that stat tough to swallow was the fact I'd summit a 4,225' peak just
10 miles later. But, with fresh legs it all wasn't that bad.

The day was drizzle off-and-on, but it never got me soaked. The
shelters were frequent and well placed so it made water fill ups and
breaks very convenient. I also saw one of the sweetest shelters
today... Bryant Ridge. It was a square shelter within a square within
a square. Hard to explain, but you'll get it when you see the pic. It
slept 20 people. I wish it was here.

I'm with one other guy at a small 6 person shelter tonight. I'm so
glad to have some elbow room and get some coverage from the rain. I'm
defintely cozy.

I have an easier day tomorrow as I descend back down into the 2,500
range. I'm really hoping the weather is nice. I haven't seen sun on
the AT in quite a few days.

Oh lastly... I met my first April 1sters. Tick Tock and Cookie from
Pennsylvania. 760 miles in 6 weeks! I admire the heck out if that.
They think they are going too fast and not enjoying the scenery
enough. That is something I'm definitely not doing. Onward!
