NLC, Casper, Michael J, Able, Marty McFly and I had a reservation for Shaw's breakfast today. Shaw's is another hiker hostel in Monson that offers an AYCE breakfast to anyone who reserves the night before. You yell them a number... For example, three, and you get 3 eggs, 3 sausage links, 3 bacon slices and a side of French toast and home fries. It was pretty good, but I think Harrison Camps breakfast on Sep 6 was better. Michael J and Able shipped out after breakfast. They're good guys. I hope to see them again in or after the wilderness.
We then got a shuttle to Greenville, ME for resupply which was great because the Hannafords and outfitter were in the same spot. Nancy our shuttle driver also brought us by Moosehead Lake to see the seaplanes getting ready for their annual convention this weekend. There were pontooned planes all over the place... In the harbor and in the air. I can just imagine what the airborne mayhem will be like this weekend.
The rest of the afternoon was about lounging and packing up for tomorrow's departure. Oh, and AYCE tacos. NLC, Casper, 2 Rings and I did them for dinner. We sat at the bar and chatted it up with Rebekah, the owner/bartender/waitress at the Lakeshore House. She wants to open a long-term resupply store in her attic for the hikers. This required hiker input since we know what we and other hikers want and need. The four of us collaborated on a list of resupply items that I believe nails 95% of what every thru-hiker looks for. She was a riot and cracking us up constantly. By the time it was over, I'd eaten 16 tacos.
I'll be hitting the sack pretty early tonight. We're hoping for an 8AM shuttle back to the trail. 100 mile wilderness tomorrow... I'm well rested now and can't wait to get back out there.
Some Question and Answer cleanup after catching up on your blog comments... Which are awesome by the way. Keep them coming!
@Switchback: Yep! Same Q-Tip and Trinket. They are both behind me now I believe. I last saw Q-Tip in Gorham and I last saw Trinket almost a week ago in Stratton. Both are milking the experience, especially Trinket. Thanks for the campsite recommendation! I'll check it out. Sobos are telling me Antlers is nice too.
About The Goats: I don't know. Carry your own gear and leave the pack animals at home unless you're completely devoid of resupply. They crap everywhere and we have enough of that with the moose... The natural inhabitants. Not to mention... It's illegal. I'm glad I saw them though. I would have racked my brain trying to figure out their tracks in the mud.
@Linz: I know. I completely forgot I was in Rangeley last year until after I blogged. My brain's gone mushy. I also realized recently that I've climbed Katahdin 3 times not twice. When do I meet my nephew for the first time? Can't wait!
@Everyone asking about the facial hair: I am performing a wedding ceremony in Texas a week after I summit the Big K. I'll be shaving it clean and at least trimming my hair a bit for that. I'm done with the beard... Food gets caught in it, I accidentally eat it sometimes and I'm worried birds may start nesting in it. Jury's still out on the long hair though. I kind of dig it.
@Robert From Milton: whoa! I loved I was able to prove myself to a Class of 1978 thru-hiker! When I reached liberty spring, I didn't think I was going to make it either! Ha. It was great chatting with you and your family. If you could, I'd like to get a hold of your email address soon. Id like to chat with you directly about some hiking topics if i could. Leave another comment with your email address in it, when I moderate the comment, I'll jot it down and delete the comment so your email address wont go public. Your lighter is still going strong! Thanks again.
@The Raybergs: heck yes we lived it up in the whites! Thanks to you guys! Krispy and Slick never showed up in Monson that I know of, so I'm having my doubts I'll see them on the trail before I finish. I guess I got a little ahead of them. But, hopefully all is well and we can all reunite soon.
Again... I love the comments! They keep me going. Entering the hundred mile wilderness tomorrow under some so-so weather predictions. Between rain and spotty phone service in the most desolate part of the AT, these blog updates may miss a day or two... Especially in Baxter State Park where Katahdin is located. I'm hearing there's no service there, but, AT&T has surprised me before. Keep your fingers crossed!
