DAY #89
START LOCATION: Duncannon, PA
FINISH LOCATION: Peters Mountain Shelter
TODAY'S MILEAGE: 11.2
TRIP MILEAGE: 1,148.9
MILES TO GO: 1,030.2
We said our goodbyes to Steph and Jay brought us back to Duncannon...
With a stop at B-K for breakfast of course. There were a few familiar
faces at the Doyle Hotel this morning, but not much time to catch
up... I had to get to the Duncannon Post Office where I had a bounce
box waiting. Wr got there and it was closed. Bewilderment. But we
noticed the PO takes lunch. They'd be back at noon... It was 11:30. I
got to play trail angel there. A local was in a rush and had a book
boxed and ready to mail to his father-in-law. He asked if he could
give it to me and I'd mail it for him. He asked if I knew how much
postage might be. It was small and light... I told him $3. He gave the
parcel and the $3 to me and thanked me up and down for the help. I
went in there and the clerk said it would be $7! Ugh... But it's just
a book! Oh, media mail... $2.77. Thank god. I almost got shafted. The
trail townfolk always treat us well, so it felt good to return some
love. I got my bounce box, grabbed a few items and shipped it back to
basecamp. We hit the trail in earnest by 12:30AM. 2 miles of the AT
was roadwalking to get out of Duncannon.
Smoke and I had lead feet at first. We definitely had a "zero
hangover". J&S's hospitality made it hard to leave. But we got back
into the swing after a quick food and water break at Clark's Ferry
Shelter, 5 miles in. The last 6 were a breeze. We had a little spit of
rain but it didn't justify a pack cover. Then at the palatial 20
person Peters Mountain shelter the skies cleared up. I'm tenting
anyway because the bugs are nasty. It's a gorgeous shelter, but the
spring for it is a long, steep, horrific 300' elevation drop, bug
infested haul. I was soaked and bug bitten when I returned. But, clean
spring water is worth it.
Back to big mileage tomorrow. We are hoping to get a nice jump on it
as the infamous PA rocks are beginning their attack. Sore feet
expected shortly. It's all good. It's what we signed up for.
